As climbing was first introduced in the Tokyo Olympics in 2022, indoor bouldering has become more popular worldwide. As of July 2023, 80+ gyms exist in Seoul, South Korea. The climbing industry is booming because of Instagram, but it's also changing both positively and negatively because of it. We interviewed Sungjea Lee, the Director and Head Routesetter at The Climb gym and Seunghyun Kim, the former Chief Routesetter at the Peakers Climbing gym to understand the logic behind it.
In July 2023, I went on a one-month trip to Seoul, South Korea and participated the summer program at Hanyang University. As an enthusiastic climber, when I walked into the local climbing gyms, I was more than surprised by their scales, business model and population. Therefore, we decided to shoot a documentary highlighting the use of social media in the climbing industry for the Cross-Cultural Documentary class with professor Bradley Rappa.
In this past semester, I had a chance to re-edit this documentary for my Editing class with professor John Scott. Using Adobe Premier Pro, I have added more animations and graphics regarding Instagram to emphasize the climbing scene.
